When most people think of brick in relation to their home, they envision the exterior walls, driveways, retaining walls, or patios. But brick can actually be a fabulous choice with numerous designs to upgrade your interior space.

By combining brick with visually appealing designs, you have a wow factor that is guaranteed to last for decades to come.

But if you’re new to interior brick work, the options can be overwhelming. So, we’re laying out some common designs and location choices to make your project decisions a little easier.

Where to Use Brick in Your Home

While the options are only limited by your creativity, there are some common rooms of the home that make especially popular options for interior brickwork.

Masonry in the Kitchen

The kitchen, for starters, is a great place to utilize brick for a unique and appealing backsplash. You could choose a clean mortar finish for a polished look or opt for a more rustic finish that can give vibes reminiscent of an old but beautiful industrial space.

Brick Fireplace & Living Spaces

Another common location for beautiful brick design is the fireplace. Surrounding the fireplace with a unique pattern makes it both a focal point of the home, as well as is a very durable material to withstand the heat put out by the flames.

Some homeowners may choose to run the brick all the way to the ceiling, while others take a more muted approach and do a layer surrounding the fireplace and finish the hearth. Options are truly endless.

Entryways & Arches with Masonry

If you’re looking to make a statement, using brick in your entryway or throughout any arches in your home is sure to wow guests. For example, consider using brick in the floor of your entryway to both protect from outside coming in, and an eye-catching design that takes your guests by surprise.

Archways in homes are making a comeback, and lining the curve not only helps delineate the spaces but adds an architectural feel. Instead of boring trim, use brick to add color and warmth.

Bedrooms & Brick Accent Walls

Accent walls are incredibly popular, especially in bedrooms. While some homeowners choose wallpaper or drastic paint, brick makes a beautiful addition to any bedroom. When placed behind the headboard, it draws the eye and gives the room a warm feeling over other bright painted color.

Brick Designs

Once you’ve chosen the location, your designs aren’t quite over, now you have to pick the perfect design!

Herringbone

Herringbone is essentially laying the brick so that it creates a zig-zag shape – stunning. The brick can be laid at a 45-degree angle, or a right angle, depending on the look you’re going for.

For many homeowners, herringbone is used in addition to a straighter design. For example, if the kitchen uses a running bond (discussed below) the area above the stove could use a herringbone for a decorative touch.

The Running Bond vs. Stack Bond

Running bond, also known as the stretcher bond, is when bricks are laid horizontally, but they are offset so that the center of a brick is above the vertical joint of the brick below it. This is different from the stack bond, in which bricks are laid directly on top of one another with all the joints lining up.

Radial

A radial, also known as circular, would be used for your archways. Additionally, it can be used as a decorative addition in kitchens, or around the fireplace. You could also opt to use a radial design around your headboard in the bedroom and then finish the wall with a straighter design.

The Weave

Finally, there’s the basket weave. As the name implies, the bricks are laid in an offsetting pattern that mimics the appearance of a woven basket. A common choice in this design is to use a combination of lighter and darker brick to give a checkerboard appearance.
